Technology News - February 2012

Digital Learning Day

February 1st was Digital Learning Day across the Nation by the Alliance for Excellent Education.  WI joined in the celebration.  Here are examples of lessons that happened that day using technology in our own District.

SIRS at the High School
By Pat Peters

We have many subscription databases available for the High School students and staff. My favorite would be either SIRS Issue Researcher or SIRS Government Reporter.  You can choose to search them separately or simultaneously.  Inside these databases you will find:

  • Over 300 issue topics – list of topics and material for your research
  • “Today’s News” – in both print and video formats of the news as it is happening
  • Political Cartoons
  • Over 3000 printable world maps
  • U.S. Supreme Court decisions
  • Historic Documents – such as George Washington’s first Inaugural Address, Martin Luther King’s famous speech, and Barack Obama’s last State of the Union Address
  • Federal Agencies – contact information, information about the organizations, and related articles
  • Information about the Presidents and Congress
  • And so much more

Please take some time to check out these databases.  Remote login information is available in the library.

Useful Links

Sweet Search - A search engine for students.  "Every Web site in SweetSearch has been evaluated by our research experts."

NBC Learn - Free resources about several topics, most including free video!  Finishing the Dream (Black History Month), The Science of Hockey, Chemistry Now and more!

Popplet - An online graphic organizer.  Brainstorm, create timelines, outlines, etc.  Multiple users can work together on one Popplet by sending an email invite.  All Popplets can also be saved as a PDF or JPEG and printed!

Gmail - Our Email Platform in 2012-2013

  • Gmail: Email storage and search tools that help you find information fast and instant messaging from right inside your account.

New London will be moving to Gmail as our email platform for the 2012-13 school year.  If you are interested in getting familiar with Gmail before it replaces Groupwise, you can sign up by going HERE.

Helpful Tips and Reminders

What should I do if I turn on my LCD projector and the image is upside down?

Because our projectors are mounted on the ceiling, we have to tell it to turn the image upside down.  To do this, you can go to your projector's menu, choose Extended Projection, then Front Ceiling.

What are Cc and Bcc in email?

In your email, you have the choice to copy other people in your emails.  Cc means "carbon copy".  It sends an exact copy of your email to another person.  Bcc means "blind carbon copy".  It sends a copy of your email to another person without showing the original recipient.

It is good practice to occassionally back up your F: drive.  You may wish to save your files on a flash drive or other external device should any outage occur at school.

Also, don't forget to shut your computers down at the end of the day.
