Technology News - April 2012

Making the Move to Google and Microsoft

Starting immediately after school is out, we will begin the process of moving from a Novell system to a Microsoft system.  This will include setting up Google Apps and Gmail.  The conversion is set to take place between June 4 and June 15.  You will not have access to your school computer during this time.  If you have extenuating circumstances in which you need a computer during those two weeks, please contact Wade Berglund so those needs can be addressed.

After the conversion is complete, a change you will notice is that your log in screen will look different.  You will retain your current username but your password will have been reset.  We will send out a communication to all employees with your new log in information when computers are able to be used.

This conversion process requires some preparation on your part.  Please read the following items closely and take action on those that pertain to you.

  • All computers will be wiped clean.  If you have any files saved on your desktop or hard drive, you need to transfer them to your F: drive or other portable device if you wish to keep them.
  • Any specialty software that you have installed will be erased.  You will need to re-install that software when you return in the fall.
  • Clean out your GroupWise Email.  We are hopeful that some email will be able to be transferred into your Gmail account, however this is not guaranteed.  Export any email you need to keep.  You may also wish to export your Address Book so that you can enter it into your new email account in the fall.  Directions for exporting email and contacts can be found below in the Helpful Hints section.

Useful Links
by Donna Young

Live Binders- Organize web resources, documents, and PDFs into online binders.  Share binders via the web and search for previously-created binders.  Perfect for sharing web resources on various topics and creating online textbooks.

Evernote- Install Evernote to your computer or mobile device to store all of your important notes.  Notes can be saved as audio, text, or webcam notes.  Email your notes to anyone.  You can search Evernote’s “trunk” to install other cool tools such as Callnote, which records Skype conversations, or MemoryLane, which turns your notes into wall posters.  Evernote is great for saving and documenting student work.

Study Blue- Create online flash cards.  Flash cards can be shared on the web or printed.  Students can use Study Blue’s quiz option for extra practice.

High School Offers Audio Options
by Pat Peters

The High School now has 125 eBooks and 54 audio digital books which can be downloaded to students' personal devices and 48 eReaders for our students to check out.  In addition, the High School library offers over 100 electronic reference books which contain multiple volumes.

To encourage the students and staff to use these resources,  Mrs. Peters created a game using QR Codes.  By scanning the codes, students and staff were taken to YouTube videos that were created by Mrs. Peters to help them learn more about the resources.  For those who did not have mobile devices, a  website was available to participate in the game.  Winners were awarded Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or iTunes gift cards.
