Personal/Social Support

Personal/Social

There are a variety of personal or social influences that can impact student learning. The School Counseling Office provides support, resources, and programming in a variety of areas related to personal and social development.

The school counseling office can provide brief counseling, which is solution-focused. Therefore, families are encouraged to seek outside resources when specialized or long-term support is necessary.

Participating with their peers in groups can also assist in skill development. Groups are run throughout the year on a variety of topics. Though not offered every year topics have included: Friendship, Decision-Making, Family Concerns, Anger Management, Study Skills, and Positive Self-Image. Groups typically meet weekly for 6-8 weeks.

1.  Bullying

Fifth and sixth grade students, in classroom guidance, learn about bullying and how to prevent bullying. A video and discussion reinforce the information. Students discuss strategies to stop bullying and receive a useful handout. They review concepts and enhance their learning through an activity from Wisconsin's Department of Public Instruction Bullying Prevention Curriculum.

Seventh and eighth grade students utilize the bully prevention program: Act Now! Bullying Stops With You. Act Now! addresses sexual harassment, physical, verbal, emotional, and cyber bullying through interactive role-playing, video segments, and engaging educational games.  To learn about what is being taught visit www.bluekids.org/educators/el_pg_actnow.asp
