Newsletter - April 10, 2010

All students in grades K-5 are automatically members of Hugs Not Drugs Club when they agree to say no to alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs and help their friends say no and they agree to stand up for what is right. Hugs Not Drugs Club is funded primarily by DPI mini grants that the students write with the assistance of Connie Morton, School Counselor. Hugs Not Drugs Club offers students opportunities to participate in school wide Red Ribbon Week activities and Hugs Not Drugs Talent Show ; the following clubs: Art Club, Horse & Pony Club, Lego Club, Math Club, Dancing Bulldogs ; and the following programs: Peer Mediation, Big Bulldogs and Character Kids. If you would like more information about Hugs Not Drugs Club or would like to volunteer to help with supervision with any of these activities, clubs or programs please contact: Connie Morton, School Counselor. Hugs Not Drugs Club meets initially in guidance class. Then students sign up for interest areas including grant-writing activities during lunch and recess.

Art Club-Advisor-to be determined
Art Club is for students in grades 4-5 who really love art and want more chances to create art projects and works of art outside the classroom experience. Art Club meets directly after school one day a week.

Horse & Pony Club-Advisors-Connie Morton, School Counselor and Lacey Spahn, Speech and Language Pathologist
Horse and Pony Club is for students in grades 3-5 who really love horses and want to learn about basic horsemanship- safety around horses, horse care, horse riding, breeds of horses, horse anatomy, horse tack and horse equipment. Horse & Pony Club meets once a week. We have fieldtrips to horse ranches with parent permission and involvement outside of the school day 2-4 times a school year, write stories and draw horses also.

Lego Club-Advisors-Connie Morton, School Counselor, Ada Young, English Language Learner Teacher, Lily Rios English Language Learner Aide
Lego Club is for students grades kindergarten through grade 5 who love creating and building with Legos. Lego Club meets once a week during lunch recess. Because so many students love Legos, we meet by 1 or 2 grade levels at a time.

Math Club-Advisor-Mike Dean, Step Volunteer-Retired Teacher, Math Club is for students in grades 2-5 who love math and seemingly can’t get enough in math class. In Math Club students learn more complex math operations and play challenging math games. Students who wish to work on remediation in math and/ or are referred by a teacher for math remediation may also participate in Math Club. Math Club meets once a week.

Dancing Bulldogs Club-Advisor-Connie Morton, School Counselor with great assistance from 5th grade student Kahlee Hacker.
Dancing Bulldogs Club is for any students in grades 3-5 who love to dance. Students practice routines and then perform in the school wide talent show and all school character assemblies.

Peer Mediation Program-Advisor-Connie Morton, School Counselor
Peer Mediation is a peaceful conflict resolution program that teaches students to solve disputes non-violently. Each October students in grades 4-5 are selected to be trained as peer mediators to help their elementary school peers solve their disputes by talking things out in a calm, systematic, problem-solving way. Any student in grades K-5 may request a mediation. Three times a week peer mediators check the mediation request box across from the school office and find the disputants during their lunch recess to sit down and talk things out. All mediations are supervised by the School Counselor.

Big Bulldog Program- Advisor-Connie Morton, School Counselor
Fifth grade students with parent permission and a recommendation from a fifth grade teacher serve their school as a Big Bulldog. Big Bulldogs take turns assisting the playground supervisors in the morning on the playground and monitor hallways at lunchtime. On inclement weather days (raining or below zero) Big Bulldogs lead organized games in the gym with adult supervision. Big Bulldogs are not supervisors, they are coaches and peer helpers encouraging good behaviors and letting the supervisor know is someone is doing something that is potentially dangerous.

Character Kids Program-Advisor-Connie Morton, School Counselor
Students in grade 5 are the character leaders of the school. Each month they practice good character and perform character skits and songs to educate the younger students about the character pillar of the month. Character Kids also perform character skits and songs in the community too. Character Kids perform to community groups. Last year they performed at St. Joseph’s Residence, WashingtonSeniorCenter, and the Daycare Center of New London.

Student Council-Advisor-David Nitka, Grade 4 Teacher
Student council members volunteer and/or are appointed by their classroom teacher to represent the student body. Then they hold an election. Student council members run the school store, plan special spirit dress-up days for the school, do at least one yearly food drive for the Community Cupboard. The Student Council acts as a liaison between the student body and administration to promote a positive school climate. Student Council also participates in some community service learning projects.
