Attend Class
Board of Education Attendance Policy
If you need to be absent, make up your work as soon as possible. Playing catch up is much more difficult than keeping up with daily assignments.

Participate in Class
Participating in class is in an important part of learning. It also helps your teachers learn what you understand and what they need to spend more time on during class. It is okay to be wrong, since making mistakes is a vital step in the learning process.

Get and Stay Organized
You will be given an agenda at the beginning of the school year. You must have your own agenda for passes, however, use your agenda to write down your assignments. At the end of the day, you can look in your agenda to see what you need to do for homework.
Freshmen are asked to get a three-ring binder with folders or dividers for each class. Binders allow you to have most of your needed materials in one location.
Several of the Freshmen Academy teachers also update online resources, including textbooks, on Moodle or their webpages.

Use Your Time Wisely
If you are given class time to work, use it. If you have study hall or resource, come prepared with things to work on.

Complete Your Homework Thoughtfully
Homework assignments are designed to help you think about a topic or concept and help you learn content. Take your time and do the best that you can. Your work is a reflection on you.

Hand Your Work in on Time
You will want your work to count for full credit, so get it in on time. There are often consequences for being late. Completing your work on time also allows you to be prepared for class so you know what is going on in every lesson.

Follow Expectations
NLHS Student Handbook
Please follow directions given by adults in the building whether or not they are your teachers. Teachers will share their specific classroom expectations with you during the first week of the term. The Freshmen Academy Staff have agreed upon the following non-negotiables for their classrooms:
1. You should be seated in your seats ready to learn when the bell rings.
2. You need to bring necessary materials to class. This includes your three-ring binder and your own agenda. Make sure you write your name on all of the passport pages in your agenda.
3. You need to leave your electronic devices (cellphones, MP3 players, iPods, etc) at home or in your locker, unless given prior permission by the teacher to bring them to class.

Communicate
We are here to help you. All you need to do is ask. If you are experiencing problems with your school work or with other students, let a member of the NLHS staff know right away.

Get Involved
NLHS offers many activities and athletics for you to become involved with. Find one or several that are right for you.
