The core areas of the Freshmen Academy include English, mathematics, science, and social studies. Available electives may be found in the NLHS Program of Studies.

English Language Arts I builds upon students’ prior knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, word usage, and mechanics of writing and include the aspects of language use: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will work with a variety of genres of literature and writing exercises linked to reading selections.

Freshmen take the mathematics course recommended by their 8th grade teacher.
Pre-Algebra includes an increase in foundational math skills and prepares students for Algebra by covering a variety of topics such as properties of rational numbers, ratio, proportion, estimation, exponents and radicals, the rectangular coordinate system, sets and logic, formulas, and solving first degree equations and inequalities.

Algebra I includes the study of properties and operations of the real number system; evaluation of rational algebraic expressions, solving and graphing inequalities; operations with and factoring of polynomials. Students will work extensively with equations.

Enriched Geometry provides students an extended opportunity to learn about geometric structures of the world. Topics include properties of plane and solid figures; deductive methods of reasoning; the study of postulates, theorems, and proofs; concepts of congruence, similarity; and rules of angle measurement in triangles.

Biology is designed to provide information regarding the fundamental concepts of life and life processes. Topics include cell structure and function, general plant and animal physiology, genetics and taxonomy.

American and Global Studies provides students with an introduction to the relationships that exist among nations as they examine the structure and functions of government, the rights and duties of citizenship, and the relationship of the individual to society and its laws. An emphasis on contemporary national and international issues is provided.

Physical Education 9 provides students with the knowledge, experience, and an opportunity to develop skills in exercises and activities. Students are provided fitness evaluations and utilize technology tools to provide feedback for self-assessment.
